BIOGRAPHY
Born in Hatch Street, Dublin 15th May 1945 and grew up beside
the river Dargle in Wicklow (hence the song "Darksome Burn"
on 'Alternative Medicine').
Shipped
off to England from the age of 7 to be schooled in academies of
repression and intellect (Ludgrove and Winchester College). At the
age of 12 wished to be a pianist/composer, at 14 a poet and at 16
a painter. Has practised all three since then.At 18 left school
for Home in Ireland and the life of an untutored painter.
At
19 spent the first 3 months of a two year scholarship at Konstfackskolan,
Stockholm studying Textile Design and embroidery in a class of 19
girls. Ran away to paint fulltime ... visiting the Beatnik joints
and jazz clubs of Copenhagen on the way.
After
starting to exhibit paintings professionally in Dublin in 1964 joined
the band Dr. Strangely Strange and began to play pubs and Arts Centres
around Dublin.
Lived in a house called 'The Orphanage' (Later referred to by Phil
Lynott in his album title) with wife to be "Orphan Annie".
Friends with Phil and Gary Moore who played occasionally with the
Strangelies. Became friends with The Incredible String Band who
visited Dublin and they introduced us to their producer Joe Boyd
who produced Dr. Strange's two albums back then.
1968 to 1971 toured extensively through England and Ireland
with Dr. Strangely Strange and then retired to be married at a Buddhist
wedding in a Tibetan monastery in Scotland, Samye Ling.
In
1969 bought an old shool near Allihies in West Cork and went
there to paint for the next 32 years. See Art
site
Maintained
an interest in music and played in small combos peripatetically.
(1980s saw a burst of Dr. Strangely Strange activity) After playing
at an 'Incredible String Band' weekend in Leeds in 1996 the original
band reformed with longterm members Joe Thoma (fiddle) and TJM Tutty
(bass) to record that difficult Third album 'Alternative Medicine'
(Big Beat CDWIKD 177). From this time on became very active musically
again and played a residency in The Old Bakery Restaurant, Castletownbere
with Padraig Murphy, drums under the name of "Toast Your Own".
In 1999 started recording 'Midnight Fry' with many friends involved
and spent two and a half years working on it. 2002 sees the start
of a small recording facility at Reentrisk and some fresh collaborations
with newly- met musicians (Irish and Indian).
